What do we do?

The NSW Ballet School was established primarily for the purpose of training young talented classical ballet students with a view to success in a career as professional classical ballet dancers.

Due to the correct and innovative teaching methods used at The NSW Ballet School, young students study and learn to appreciate this beautiful art-form in a fully supervised and artistic environment.

Whilst The NSW Ballet School is a professional training school, it does not only cater to the very talented and career minded young dancer. If physical fitness; co-ordination; posture; the pure enjoyment of dance or appreciation of the classics is the main goal for ballet training, The NSW Ballet School will ensure that these goals are met.

Students are taught the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) Syllabus. Founded in 1920 by a group of celebrated European Dancers, the RAD has come to represent the very highest standards in the teaching of classical ballet. It has grown to become the largest most influential public examining body for classical ballet in the world, operating in some 50 countries. The NSW Ballet School goes one step further.

CLASSICAL BALLET STREAM COURSES

★ Junior School

○ Pre- Primary (Ages 3-4 years)

This class is an introduction for very young students to ballet.

Students learn the first positions of the feet; musicality; mime and posture all in a relaxed and fun class.

○ The Primary Grade (Ages 5-6 years)

Where the real training begins with students developing the strength, posture and turnout required for future Grades.

○ Grades One - Four. (Ages 7+ years)

Students in these grades are now building on their technique and vocabulary of dance steps.

The introduction of National Character in these grades is very much enjoyed by the students and gives them the opportunity to study styles from various countries.

Junior students undertaking examinations will be required to complete all classes in their individual course.

★ Senior School

Beginning with Intermediate Foundation (11 years+) and concluding with Solo Seal (six years study), the Vocational Graded classes are designed for students wishing to fulfil a career in classical ballet. Training is intensive and requires a high level of commitment. Pointe work now begins and creative development is nurtured.

Senior students undertaking examinations will be required to complete all classes in their individual course.

PERFORMING ARTS STREAM COURSES

★ Jazz Classes

Although classical ballet is our first love (& we are really good at it) many students and parents expressed an interest in other dance forms. We added a Jazz Class to our weekly timetable in 2012 and the students are loving it.

Jazz is a great way to increase flexibility, rhythm & physical fitness.

Jazz flexibility, strength, co-ordination, musicality & rhythm are all the benefits students gain from jazz.

These classes will teach Funk, Musical Theatre, Cabaret & Broadway styles of dance.

High kicks, multiple turns & giant leaps all whilst having a great time.

The class is held on a Saturday morning.

Jazz Uniform: Leotard, plain black full length leggings, ballet stockings / ballet socks, black elasta bootie jazz shoes, hair in a neat secure bun with fringes pinned back.

★ Lyrical/ Contemporary Classes

We added Lyrical / Contemporary classes to our weekly Timetable in 2016.

These classes delve into artistic modern dance by including floor work, co-ordination, improvisation, multiple turns, jumps, leaps and creative expression through dance, mime and movement.

Lyrical/ Contemporary Uniform : Leotard, plain black full length leggings, ballet stockings / ballet socks, flat ballet shoes (with elastics sewn on) /foot thongs or bare feet, hair in a neat secure bun with fringes pinned back.

Soft, thick padded, safety knee pads are encouraged for all dancers in this class, as contemporary dance involves a lot of floor based dance choreography.

Each and every one of us has a natural rhythm living within, and it’s time to let it shine.
