The Rocks 2000 NSW

Leading orchestral training and education.

What do we do?

Sydney Youth Orchestras is the leading orchestral training and education provider in New South Wales, founded as a single orchestra in 1973 by the visionary music educator and conductor, Peter Seymour. For almost half a century SYO has grown to become a community of over 550 young musicians, aged 6-24, from all over Sydney and New South Wales. We gather weekly for rehearsals in inner suburban Sydney and Western Sydney, in 14 different ensembles carefully constructed to match skill, age and experience.

Together we inspire excellence, presenting public concerts and performing in major community events such as Carols in the Domain, energetic Meet The Orchestra shows for children aged 0-8, and outreach programs including concerts and workshops in regional New South Wales. We celebrate and recognise the thousands of young musicians who have nurtured their love of orchestral music, learnt important life skills, had formative experiences and made lifelong friends in SYO. Many of them have gone on to careers as professional musicians. They secure leading positions in all the major Australian orchestras and internationally. Indeed, Australia’s professional orchestras simply would not exist without this concentrated training, and Sydney Youth Orchestras is a place to learn the valuable practical skills, which transforms students into professionals.
