HOW WE TEACH JUDO
At the Brisbane Judo Club we practise the core philosophy and values of Judo; efficiency (ju) way (do) – a martial art and sport that requires discipline and respect but one that is fun and accessible to all.
Judo is both physical and dynamic and focusses on players (judoka) learning skills and techniques to throw their opponents for maximum points, dominate in hold-downs and grappling ground-work (newaza), and as senior players (only) extending newaza to strangles (shime waza) and arm-locks (kansetsu waza).
Brisbane Judo Club follows a performance pathway for its players to build upon and improve their judo, by offering professional, accredited coaching for age and grade-appropriate classes. Each class focuses on skills to extend players’ repertoire and knowledge of judo techniques in a fun and safe way.
We promote self-discipline, personal development, grading and competition opportunities, engagement with others, and above all, fun through progress!
Come and train at a club with:
• Professional, accredited coaching
• Age and grade-appropriate classes for all
• Performance pathways
• A welcoming and fun squad
WHAT IS JUDO
Judo is first and foremost a philosophy; a way of applying your body and mind – literaly translated as The Gentle Way.
Founded by Jigoro Kano in 1882, The Kodokan – a Buddhist temple in Tokyo, Japan – became the birthplace of the practise of Judo. Kano’s vision for Judo was “maximum efficiency, minimum effort”. The theory places an emphasis on the balance of energy and force, when resisting a more powerful opponent will result in your defeat, whilst adjusting and evading your opponent’s attack will cause them to lose balance, their power will be reduced, and you will defeat him. This flow of balance makes it possible for weaker opponents to beat significantly stronger ones.
