AYNSW offers group or private classes in Yoshinkan Aikido, Shinto Muso Ryu (sword & staff). AYNSW Chief Instructor is Darren Friend Shihan (6th dan) a highly qualified and experienced martial arts instructor who is teaching at the Marrickville dojo every session.
As a traditional Japanese dojo AYNSW provides a warm and welcoming environment. Traditional approaches to martial arts training are upheld. Naturally there is a reason for everything that is practiced and Darren Shihan is always happy to explain not just the “how” to do but also the reasons “why” we train this way. This knowledge empowers students as they are not simply copying a shape, but are actively creating a form with purpose right from the beginning.
OUR CLASSES
★ General Aikido Class
Beginners, Intermediate and blackbelt students are all welcome to attend General Classes. Emphasis is placed on practicing, developing and applying fundamentals under supervision to ensure the correct form is learnt and reinforced. General aikido classes usually begin with a warm up, a review of individual basic movements and then paired practice with set techniques. As the class progresses emphasis may change to speed and stamina, applying basics in self-defense situations or more advanced techniques.

Tuesday 6.30-7.45PM (Hurstville Martial Arts)
Thursday 7.00-8.30PM

★ Aiki Kids Class
The aiki kids class is a fun mix of simplified martial arts techniques, aerobic exercises to burn off energy, tumbling and body strengthening all mixed up in fun games. The Aiki Kids content has been designed by Darren Shihan to safely introduce young minds and bodies to aikido as a martial art. There is no air punching and kicking. Students learn a full contact martial art but in a safe and responsible manner. Emphasis is placed on co-operation and working as a group, self discipline, respect for self and others.
It is common for parents to warm up or practise to the side of the Aiki Kids class and then stay for the next adults class. Kids can stay and read/play quietly after the Aiki Kids class has finished.
Saturdays 10.00-11.30AM
THE DOJO
The dojo uses the main school hall and has the latest roll out mat surface for a professional training environment.
Weapons training is an integral part of aikido training. Weapons are provided for students to use when the instructor teaches a weapons component.
AYNSW instructors always put the student’s safety at the foremost of training. A lot of time is spent teaching and developing the skills needed to ensure that training can be carried out in a safe manner. As student’s progress in their skill development speed increases. People of all ages, backgrounds and fitness levels are welcome. The training is individualized to each student to bring out their best.
The goal of AYNSW is to bring the benefits of aikido training to the local community in Sydney’s inner west. Yoshinkan Aikido is renowned for its structured syllabus and easy to learn technique with emphasis on strong basics. With many years of experience training at the Yoshinkan Honbu (headquarters), the instructors bring a solid understanding and professional approach to every class. As well as the obvious self defense skills developed through training a martial art, aikido training offers many additional benefits. It is a full body workout that utilizes and develops core strength. Aikido practioners enjoy increased flexibility and stamina.
Aikido training is done in a cooperative manner. Students learn together as they work through each technique taking both the attacker and defender roles. AYNSW welcomes students of all ages and works of life, it is never too late to take up aikido.
Yoshinkan Aikido is well known in Japan for its emphasis on building both strong technique and spirit. The dojo Shomen (front) has a caligraphy written for us by Inoue Sensei. The main body of the text is YouShin HouJu, this is from which the name Yoshinkan was orriginally taken. YouShin HouJu means “develop spirit, preserve propserity”. That is by applying ourselves to aikido training, training with the correct spirit, we will develop ourselves and be happy/healthy/successful.
