ABOUT THE GALLERY
Opening in 2005, Hawkesbury Regional Gallery was a part of a major upgrade of cultural facilities undertaken by Hawkesbury City Council. The upgrade included the acquisition and restoration of the former Windsor Hospital, the redevelopment of the hospital site to accommodate a new library, art gallery and café, and the construction of a new museum in Baker Street.
The Gallery is a prominent public gallery within North-Western Sydney and the NSW Regional Galleries network. Curating a large proportion of exhibitions in-house, the program supports regional and NSW artists and brings new work to audiences. The program also includes touring exhibitions from regional and state galleries and touring organisations throughout Australia. The changing exhibition program covers a diverse range of art forms.
The exhibition program is complemented by public and education programs. These include exhibition openings, artist and curator talks, master classes presented by artists, studio visits, art after school and school holiday workshop programs. Tailored education visits are also available.
ABOUT THE MUSEUM
Hawkesbury Regional Museum is located in one of our country’s oldest settlements - the third on mainland Australia after Sydney and Parramatta. Museum entry is free, with a small fee for group guided tours.
Here you can see things you won’t find anywhere else, from the celestial globe that belonged to John Tebbutt, an internationally-renowned astronomer who lived his whole life in the Hawkesbury, to the diary kept by a member of HMAS Hawkesbury during World War II and recording the Japanese surrender. Not to mention that uniquely Hawkesbury creation, the Flabbit.
The Museum is made up of a purpose-built building and historic Howe House. This Georgian house has been fitted out with furnishings and displays that reflect its many uses over more than 200 years of history. It is open for bookings for guided tours by contacting the museum.
ABOUT THE LIBRARY
The Hawkesbury Library Service has a collection of over 140,000 items including books, magazines, CDs, DVDs, eBooks and audiobooks.
Both our Libraries have free wifi, internet PCs and photocopying, scanning and printing facilities. Hawkesbury Central Library also has a dedicated Local Studies space and three study rooms.
Our two Libraries (Richmond & Windsor) are places that bring together the Hawkesbury community to learn, discover and connect.
EDUCATION
Engage, Excite, Inspire, Create!
Education programs and visits of the current exhibitions are led by Gallery & Museum staff and educators. Education visits are designed to cater to current curriculum needs and are tailored for infants, primary, secondary and tertiary students and other educational groups.
Using an interactive tour discussing the key points of the exhibition, along with age appropriate creative activities related to the exhibitions, our program aims to complement your classroom studies.
