Overview
- Join the happiest choir on earth! Girls learn to play the ukulele, write songs, and perform in a fun, inclusive community on Saturday mornings.
At Toy Choir participants quickly develop their rhythm, pitch, and understanding of chords, which lays a solid foundation for writing their own music.
The sessions are led by emerging artists aged 17-30 who have come through the program themselves. This gives participants aspirational role models; working with those not much older than themselves provides girls recognisable, positive role models, & encourages an “if she can do it, so can I” outlook.
The Toy Choir performs at both significant public events and concerts for family and friends. Past appearances have included TED Sydney, Sydney Festival, The Australian Museum, The Venice Biennale in Angelica Mesiti’s “Assembly”, Sydney Mardi Gras with Paul Capsis, and with the Sydney Chamber Opera.
We are based in UTS Haymarket right near Central Station and are supported by Create NSW and City of Sydney Council to provide opportunities for girls. It is important to us that money not be a barrier to participation, and need-based scholarships are available.
